The Salman Khan Verdict

All across the social media and new channels there was havoc regarding the recent Salman Khan verdict. A lot of people thought the verdict was justified and a lot others were totally against the idea of putting him behind bars.

The purpose of the judicial system in any country is

  1.  to serve the people by ensuring equal justice under law, it protects the rights of the citizens and it acts as the interpreter and guardian of the constitution.
  2.  In many states judiciary enjoys the power of judicial review by virtue of which the judiciary decides the constitutional validity of the laws enacted or of the decree issued
Going by the first point above it seems to be the right thing to do to put Salman Khan behind bars as he's been proven guilty in the 2002 hit and run case. But if we look at the second point we sense an element of flexibility in the judiciary. Now the question is whether Salman really deserves this flexibility.
Now putting him behind bars will certainly not bring the dead man back to life nor does it act as a reformation for the person he was 13 years ago. If the purpose of putting a criminal in jail is reform then we certainly say that Khan has very well made efforts to do the same in the past 13 years.
From being a reckless angry young man who was heartbroken and torn in love Salman now owns an NGO called the Being Human Foundation which has done remarkable work in the past couple of years. The NGO basically does a host of activities like selling clothes, paintings, braclets etc and the money collected through this goes for charity.  He has worked extensively for cancer and aids patients.
The foundation had provided 2500 tankers to the drought afflicted Marathwada district in Maharashtra. Amidst all the legal troubles the actor had adopted an impoverished widow's family in Kashmir Valley. A person like him with a golden heart certainly does not have to go to jail to be reformed. In fact putting him behind bars would be a loss to society. Even the family of the person who died is very much for compensation. Compensation which would sustain their family for the years to come. Yes footpath is not the place to drive but mind you a footpath is also not a place to sleep.
When so many people are going berserk about him getting a bail why isn't anyone bothered about the teenager who killed Nirbhaya who is roaming Scott free, what about the God like minister who had charges for causing the Gujarat rights and has now become the Prime Minister and is on a world tour spending all our money.
I think all those who are hell bent on putting Salman in jail should rethink their about their idea of ' oh he's rich and putting him jail brings justice to the common man'. Think before you jump to a conclusion.
